The characters are there as spacers, to allow the pages to render properly in some older browsers. They're sort of like HTML shims. No big secret.

I'll note that it was visible for me. The only thing I saw in Eddie's post that might be doing it is that he didn't put quotation marks around the attribute "white" in his font tag.
