OK, the error message in /var/log/httpd/error_log was:
Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 134 bytes)
I changed the line in /etc/php.ini from:
memory_limit = 8M
to
memory_limit = 256M
and that seems to have fixed the problem.
