Not having has never been the thing I've regretted most in my life. Not trying is.

No pre-set limit sounds good, but when we come in and start throwing connections all around, what are the chances we hit a wall?

Okay, if that is the same thing HR said, then I'd be interested to hear what the problem was from their POV. My impression was that there WAS a limit, which we regularly exceeded.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

My impression was that there WAS a limit, which we regularly exceeded.

Nope. The terms of our account were "unlimited" MySQL usage. When we used "too much," they kicked us off.

Ah, okay.

What prats.

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

There was a limit, but not one that they could tell us, IIRC, or something wrongheaded like that. IOW, it only really came up when we started exceeding it and they were trying to shut us down. If this is genuinely no limit, that's great. If this is "we've never had a reason to enforce a limit before" and then we come along and they get antsy, that's another story. Maybe it's not even an issue on a dedicated, I sure don't know. But it's just something that I'd like to see clarified as we evaluate.

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

So, I'm advocating that if Kristen hasn't taken the offer off the table that we go with it.

I'm torn between this and Astarte's point that taking the offer could be a rough deal for Kristen. If Kristen feels it's worth trying, then I'd say go for it.

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

It's like the old joke about the all-you-can-eat restaurant.

Customer: I'd like some more. Waiter: You can't get any more. Customer: I thought this was an "all-you-can-eat" restaurant. Waiter: Yep. That's all you can eat.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I want to advocate for Rob's offer. We'd be getting a dedicated server all to ourselves that we could tweak to our heart's content for $129/month (or even $99/month if a slower processor isn't a big deal). We wouldn't need to worry about Kristen's other Fangeek customers. Although we haven't dealt with this provider, Rob has, and he seems to have a good relationship with the company similar to Kristen's with Steven. I don't think we'd be taking the same risk as we took with HR or would take with the place Astarte mentioned.

with a gleam in my eye, and an almost airtight alibi

I'm with Jon on this.

Also, I agree that we should pay for the months we have been with Fangeek. There's absolutely no reason Kristen and Monique should be out the money that's been spent on our behalf. We've gotten a lot of benefit from this hosting situation. Kudos and thanks to everyone who helped to get us this far. It's never easy.

Absolutely. We got a service -- even if it's not a long-term solution for us, we absolutely should pay for it, and even if Kristen and Monique don't want to take our money, we should give it to them regardless.

One other thing -- With a dedicated server, where we have root access, there would be much less need for customer support. I'm not saying we don't want a provider who'll be quickly accessible and helpful, but It's less critical than it is now where we rely on the provider to change our MySQL/PHP settings.

t edit And another, "yea" on paying Fangeek for our usage until we leave!

Yeah, I'm not a Geeky here, but Rob's place's offer does sound pretty darn good.

I'd hate to see our demandingness (cause we SO are) cause Kristen to either get horribly bitter (well, more bitter!) or screwed over.
