All the cool kids get this message, right?
Huh. If I'm getting it, does that mean I'm cool?

BTW, in case I didn't say it before, this is how it will be from now on. If we go over, we get that handy dandy, and yes annoying, error message. As opposed to flying way way over and getting yanked.
I actually can't take credit for it. It was as much of a surprise to me that they implemented it as it was to you guys.
Kristen, did they say when they implemented it? Because if they did it a while ago, and we've been fine til now, then it has to be external.
If it is external, can we track who's making all these extra connections?
I'm looking at this page with the following URL:

The page is displaying only posts 4994, 4999, 5002, 5006, 5007, 5008, 5009, 5011, 5014, 5015, 5018, 5019, with 5019 being the last post.

Many of us have tried to submit posts, only to have it fail during the "post message" process. The thought above, is that if it fails after the number is assigned, the post still doesn't get posted, but the board considers that number assigned.
Someone said it better upstream, Jon. I think it was Liese.
eta...
Take this post, and yours, for instance. I had to try to submit it four times before it was posted. The post number is 5025. Your post number is 5021.
Jon, we've been getting "too many connections" errors. When the error hits while someone is trying to post, the database increments but doesn't record the post, so we're getting a lot of gaps.
Should we go to peoplesforum for awhile and see if it still happens?
We really should have somewhere we can display a status message -- one like:
"We know about the max_connections message, please be aware there will be many skipped message numbers, working on it."
I've looked at the daily numbers, and we must have been hitting over our max_connections every damned moment. Here's the table for the month:

I don't know whether this is at all relavent to the wonkiness (I'm getting the error message pretty regularly too), but I had the links to the message center disappear from the botton of the page, and the left-hand column. Refreshing my browser (I'm running Mozilla) didn't fix it, but shutting the thing down completely and restarting it caused the links to appear again--it might just be a quirk on my end, but I've never noticed that sort of thing happening before so I just thought I'd mention it.
Leigh, it was probably just luck of the draw that they came back when you restarted, as opposed to refreshing.
