It's a default database setting for the full-text index feature. Presumably to limit server drain, but there's no way around it without patchy code or pleas to the web hosts. Lots of pleas.

The plus side of the three-letter thing is that when I decide to do a percentage of my posts mentioning X, the count's way lower than expected.
