Julie, the search function was deactivated after the first server crash because we felt it was too taxing on the server.
Yep, DX, I know it's not working now. But I used to read statements such as "you have to be logged in to search", and that just wasn't true (for me.)
So now when I see discussion that says "oh, but you have to be logged in to do 'X'", I worry that won't be true either. Particuarly if you a) weren't aware of whatever bug was allowing me to continue to search in the visitor mode, and b) if the same code is used for 'X'. (Such as recent discussion on making Bureaucracy only readable for those logged in.)
AFAIK, there was no code in the search function to limit it to logged in users. It's easy to stick in that feature. For instance, log out and try to go to [link] -- it should take you to the front page instead.
Julie, I need to read more carefully next time, because I totally misunderstood. I thought you were worried that you couldn't search now. My bad.
You're right that search was supposed to be available only to registered users, just as user profiles are only available to registered users, so you should've been logged in to be able to use it. I didn't realize that part hadn't been coded.
Is this the place we propose new thread titles or the other one?
I can never remember.
Angel is almost done.
How about
Angel III: Big Damn Evil
AFAIK, there was no code in the search function to limit it to logged in users.
I'm glad to hear that Jon, no code means no bug!
I guess I either misunderstood, or someone else did, when they were saying that search was only available to registered users.

Oh and whilst I was composing, DX came along and explained. Thanks.
Daniel, I'll repost your suggestion in Bureaucracy.
edit: Except I see you already have. :)
Things have calmed down at work again for the moment. If you need me to set up a CVS archive, it would be my pleasure.
bitterchick, do you want to hand off to Rob?
There's currently a trouble ticket in to find about why the host move broke the in-domain e-mail.
Man, I grouch at these people.
I would LOVE to hand off to Rob.
Also if someone can get rid of this energy-sucking bug I seem to have acquired, I'd appreciate it.
This morning I have had some slight trouble logging in. I had to input my user name and password twice in order for it to accept me. I don't get an error message, it just takes me to the front page and I'm not logged in. It's not a big deal but I thought someone might like to know.
I'm using IE 5.0
