Hi all:

I've been having a look at the Phoenix code that ita sent me. I'll probably start working on MARCIE soon... though I still have a doubt first.

Reading the posts about the subject, I see that Noumenon first proposed a link in the text of the MARCIEd posts, pointing to the relevant part of the FAQ. ita and others opposed it, since it would be distracting and eye-catching. Noumenon proposed then having a big text at the top of the page right after it reloads, warning: "all posts by this user will be blocked until you decide to", etc.. Apparently Nou is really worried that newbies might click on this feature by accident... :-)

My question is: is the above okay with the rest of the people? I thought that a variant of that could be a confirmation screen: "All posts by will be blocked from you until you decide to unblocked them. Are you sure you really want to do it?", like the one we have now to delete a post. Which option do people prefer? Or do you think it's unnecessary?

Also, it was mentioned that there should be a way to see just one particular post that you could be interested in, without unblocking that user. Are people still interested in it?

Speak up now, or be silenced by the (fake) consensus...

(Kellog):

ita's post where she describe how would the "show me this post from the blocked user just this once" feature would work:

ita "Buffistas Building a Better Board" Apr 3, 2003 2:17:10 pm EST

And Noumenon describing his system to inform people that they have in fact blocked another poster:

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I don't know anything about anything, but I would love to be able to block a user but still be able to see a single post of theirs with one click, instead of having to unblock and reblock them. Because I'm nosy like that. Actually, that nosiness means I probably will never use a filter, so feel free to disregard.

Our wings are not tired.

I would probably use the filter, but I could also see where I might want to view an individual post after reading responses to the post. I could deal with unblocking and blocking, but one click would be handy.

Our wings are not tired.

My only suggestion RL is to threadsuck and search on a key word you remember.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

The functionality that would be most convenient for me is:

  • one click in-thread to block a user

  • one click in-thread to reveal a single post of a blocked user

  • a section in the "set profile" page where you can take people off your MARCIE list.

No other candidate is asking the hard questions, like "Did geophysicists assassinate Jim Henson?" or "Why is there hydrogen in America's water supply?" --defective yeti

I think it's good that PaulJ is bringing up the suggestions I snuck into Marcie because they were new and haven't had a complete vetting, except by ita. She's so responsible, I almost feel like I'm making more work for her when I suggest things because she always has to make sure it won't cause a catastrophe. Really appreciate it. And all the while accomplishing things like the feature requirements for our host and the password resetting. She's a pillar.

Personally, I'm not in favour of an additional warning everytime you block an user, but only because that's More Work for me (yes, I'm lazy).

I think that the possible problems caused by the lack of that warning could be reduced with a appropiately helpful link text: how about "Block user", instead of just "Block" in the link? Would that be too long? One click blocking/unblocking would also make it easier for anyone who has made a mistake to unmake it.
