Anyone can click on the "search thread" button, but if you're not logged in you get a "Sorry, only registered members can access this function. Please register or log in" message instead of a page of results.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.
The plan is to have it in the left hand column, with read new and bookmarks and other things that only appear to registered users. That way you can have the choice of only searching the thread you were reading when you clicked the link.

That's not the same way the posting box works. It's just not visible if you're not logged in.
