Ability to search profiles (for e-mail addresses)

I believe we can do this.

We can? Something I missed finding out about, clearly. Is it a 'mark it done' job?

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

The request is for Admins to be able to search users by email address. This has not yet been implemented.

Um... I think there's more than one version of the request, actually. There's 'admins able to search for users by e-mail address', and there's 'ability (for everyone, I guess) to search profiles (by user-name or id number) for e-mail address'.

They work in opposite directions: one to find the user from the addy, and the other to find the addy from the user name (presumably you can use the search engine to find a post, any post, by them, and go from there).

Edit because I was being stupid. The search engine is a good tool for ordinary users to find other users and their e-mails: the admins need something different. One has a work-around that's good enough it's not really a work-around, but the other is a real high prority need.

In the search function, you can search for posts by userid, which would presumably allow for people to fine the profile, and then the email address. (At least, that's what I've done.) There was an admin request upthread that dealt with searching for a userid by email address, to aid in user requests when they don't include their name in the email.

So is the request for an ability to find user e-mails from their user name fulfilled? I think it is met by the search engine.

What's not been met is the request for admins to be able to find a user's name/id/profile from thier e-mail address.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I'd like to suggest the bump a couple requests down a bit --

  • message system, by which private posts can be left for other member, of limited length and retained for limited duration
  • tagline archival
  • (optional) birthdates in user profiles, with automatic "Happy Birthday to []" displays
  • Events -- give users the ability to enter an event (JM playing guitar, ASH on Leno) which will be displayed up to the relevant date

And bump up:

  • Shorten long URLs

Also, it should be noted which have been implemented on the test site:

  • Display list of user names and e-mail addresses (would the 'search profile by e-mail address or for e-mail address' feature cover this? They seem similar) Yes, the search by e-mail address would address the same thing this is to
  • Threadsuck

Which have been pre-coded, but not integrated into code:

  • Tag closer
  • Shorten long URLs

I don't understand "search by thread" -- is that "move search out of beta?" That should be on the list.

I missed the discussion on changing the colour of threads with new messages -- I don't quite see the point.

I'll poke at the CVS when I get home tonight.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

FWIW, I think "move search out of beta" should be at the top of the list, since searching seems to be the most missed feature.

Those changes noted. My understanding was that 'search by thread' meant some way in which you could use the search engine to search only one thread, without having to muck around changing your subscriptions first. However, moving the search engine we've got out of beta seems to be higher priority.
