You can search a thread by adding the thread_id to the search page URL, e.g. you can search this thread by using [link]

There is no phrase searching, but the posts are sorted by some arcane formula for relevance, so the hits near the top should be closest to being the actual phrase.
Non-tech geek person asking a question-- Hopw do we know what the thread ID is?
Look in your address bar while you're in the thread. The URL contains the thread ID in the form "thread_id=n".
