OK here's a thing.
I want to send personal email to Buffista X.
I don't have their email address handy.
They haven't posted lately.
Their profile may or may not contain their email address, because that's an option.
My powers as an admin allow me to go and find it, but the page
doesn't
allow me to see whether they want their email public or private. So using that method to find their email address would be an abuse of my stompy-footed powers.
Also as that method is only available to stompies, not fair to non-stompies.
The solution is to use the search engine to find a post by the user, click on their name and find their email address, if it's public. But it's not a great solution.
Having been in that situation, John, I can say that one thing I dislike about using the search function for that is that you have to remember exactly how everyone spells and capitalizes their name. Which is sometimes hard when they have changed their user name from board to board.
Are you saying you want an indication on the admin page if the e-mail is hidden?
I just want more people to have their emails available -- the default is hidden, I think?

I think that would be good, certainly.
It still leaves everyone else in the situation of having to ask an admin to get it for them or use the search, but it would assuage my guilt at looking people up the stompy way.
I'm all for erring on the side of privacy.
Done, John.
I just meant that along the lines of "wouldn't it be nice..."
Jesse, I know what you really mean, and I'm going to change the code so
IF (user="Jesse") THEN dont_show_any_emails_because_she's_weird
Damn
you're quick. That's great. Thankyou.
[edit: what ita actually did, not the Jesse clause]
Phffftttt.
See if I ever email you again.
That's not even real code!!!
