The book that originated both the movie and the tv series was non-fiction. The set designers and camera men? filmographers? deserve a lot of credit. My HS experience wasn't like that, but I grew up around that. In fact, growing up around it probably made me rebel against having that as a HS experience.

Yeah, mine wasn't quite like that. Sports weren't nearly as huge, for one thing--adults didn't care anywhere near that much about high school sports. (Although the football players were stars, yeah.)
