Java, the size and font are hardwired into the code.
Not so! The font is, but for posts, the size is not. The browser default size is used. DX is correct that Verdana is bigger than most other fonts, so posts will looks bigger than the text on most other web pages. We've gone around and around on this topic in BBaBB and the current set-up seems to be the best compromise until we build-in user-defined stylesheets.
Can we just remove the font faces from the style sheet, so that the browser's defaults are used? That's the way WX did it. Let's everybody pick their own. If there's a compelling technical reason for specifying faces, I'll live with it, but if there isn't, why do we need them?
Just to note that I know I sound like a broken record here, but I really hate Verdana.
And I really like it, so ptthhht!
Seriously, the usability folks swear by it. It was designed specifically as an easy-on-the-eyes screen font.

They never ran into the problem of Ple=Pie.

I understand that. You know what? That logic only works if you prefer to use Verdana as your default font. If a font forces me to change my browser settings to make it appear at a reasonable size, which then makes every other site in the world look tiny, then it's not very useable to me.
That probably wasn't very clear, but if I set my browser's default size to make Verdana look good, then everything else looks awful. The other thing is, IIRC, the better legibility is only noticeable at very small point sizes.
My point is that if people prefer Verdana, they can (and probably do) specify it in their browser settings. If they prefer something else, then don't prevent them from using it.
The Verdana doesn't bother me (except for the occasional plei/pie thing, as noted) but it's a little annoying having to change the text size on my browser each time I log on to the board.
xposted with DX's much more helpful explanation.
I have no opinion on fonts, but Herah, as far as I know, there's no list of mailing lists.
Yay! I used the search engine and it rocked! A week ago I didn't even know where the search engine was. Go search engine builders!
Herah, ita posted this reply to the same question a few weeks back:

Since then the capitolistas (baltimore-dc) list has been created.
Making a list of lists has, I think, been added to the list of things to do.
