I just found out that the fine folks behind the Eldred vs. Ashcroft lawsuit are refocusing their efforts on the legislative branch after the Supreme Court determined they didn't have a right to controvert the Congressional law on this point.
This group, led by Stanford Law professor Larry Lessig, is advocating an expansion of the public domain, specifically requiring that a copyright holder pay $1 to renew a copyright after 50 years or the material moves into the public domain. The public domain is a deeply valuable resource which contributes to the development of all the arts and sciences--and the wide availablility of our intellectual history is essential to the kind of creative thinking that has served the United States so well.
Please take a look at the Reclaim the Public Domain Petition and consider signing it and/or passing the word along to your friends.
