Um, well, we listened to aggressively cheerful music sung by people chosen for their ability to dance. Then we ate cookie dough, and talked about boys.

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

Just getting the word out on behalf of my Cousins' au pair...

They're moving to Germany for work at the end of the summer and they cannot take her with them. She is wonderful. If you know of anyone nice who needs a great au pair my profile addy is good. She's currently in the DC area.

Why isn't everyone pelting me with JOY, dammit? - Zenkitty

Took me a sec to get it, but when I did, this tee cracked me up. (Mathy types, cat-fans, also editor-types who were recently discussing that lower-case-u is not a particular math function, Take Note!)

If anyone is going to Shakespeare's Globe any time this season, let me know: you can use our exhibition vouchers, since we won't be able to.

not your mom's socks.

An anthology I have a story in is printing in August with a gorgeous cover and a great list of authors. The publisher is making her first foray into kickstarter as a way to take pre-orders and fund a bigger print run. Should you be inclined, the campaign is here: [link] At higher levels, there's a sweet poster option.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Tomato workers in Florida are treated badly - wage theft, wages less than minimum wage, harassment up to and including unprosecuted rape, and working conditions so bad that in extreme cases growers were prosecuted for slavery as recently as 2010. You can find out more from "The coalition of Immokalee Workers" (CIW) [link] . The CIW has successfully pressured many tomato buyers to join a program where they pay a penny more per pound for tomatoes but buy only on condition that workers get treated with minimal decency and dignity. Some of the largest fast food giants including McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell and Subway. Wendy's is the largest fast food holdout, saving itself less than a penny per meal.

So, at a local Olympia festival, a group of us filmed passers by donating pennies as a charitable gift to Wendy's so that they could afford such costly change in policy, and then brought the hat load of pennies to a local Wendy's to pass on to corporate headquarters. (We made sure to be as non-disruptive as possible since none of this is the fault of the local workers.) Here is the link to youtube: [link]
