I think it's like those Magic Eye pictures. If you stare at Smallville eps for long enough, at some point your eyes just blur a little and it all becomes starkly obvious.
After that, of course, you know the trick, and you start seeing the HoYay! everywhere. But for everyone else, romping hobbits still look perfectly innocent. And by 'everyone else', of course, I mean my mother.
