Based on a quick Google and no more, I think the "convent = women / monastery = men" divide is the main, possibly only, one. It may be more complex than that, but I can't find an explanation at the moment.

That's the common English way, at any rate. this page might be worth a quick glance if you're interested in going further. And makes it clear that they're pretty much interchangeable in most circumstances.

Well, I've always planned on this being a house of nuns, so I'm good that way.
Oh, and my Spike's Desoto miniature car came in the mail today. I popped open that collector's sealed display package and am rolling the car around my desk right now, running over things and pretending they're the "Welcome to Sunnydale" sign.
Music-while-writing note: much of above bit was written to various parts of the Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack. Good for working on tense bits.
