Megan, a Tivo will work without a subscription. You won't be able to set up season passes, but you can manually schedule recordings.
There's also MythTV, but I'm not sure how plug-n-play they are. (Didn't Gud build one a while back? He would probably know better than me.)

Coding and Sleeping
With MythTV you still need a subscription to get listing data. It runs $20/year.
MythTV is pretty far from plug and play and can get pretty complicated unless you have over-the-air, analog cable or unencrypted digital cable/satellite. It's a fantastic system if you have an old computer laying around and are willing to do the fiddling, but it's not for someone who just wants to plug it in and have things work.

Conficker activation passes quietly but threat isn't over. Apparently, it did activate (wasn't a hoax), but hasn't actually done anything yet; people are advised to keep on worm-hunting.
