Ok, now I'm reading all kinds of horror stories about HD from cable boxes not working with receivers. Gaaaaaaaaaaaah. I just want to be able to plug shit in and have it work. Is that really so much to ask?

Yes, that's what I suspect we'll end up doing.

PC, I have the Canon SD750 as my second camera (first is a Nikon D40x) and it's been fantastic. A charged battery lasts for hundreds of photos; I've never had a problem with it. I would never go back to AAs.
