Given my extraordinary techo problems lately, I'm considering getting a part time job at the Apple store.
Access to geniuses and employee discounts in and environment with smart, cheerful people. Sounds pretty good.
Anybody done it know anyone who has?
I think I have settled on this model [link] Converter box for HDTV.
Meritline has them 2 for $97, free shipping, add the coupons, and that's $17 for two.
This is a pretty lame question, but I'm wondering if the CD-R discs I bought a few years back are also DVD-R discs, or do I have to head over to Best Buy for those?
CD-R disks only hold 650-700MB of data.
DVD-R disks hold a little over 4GB data.
Make sure of which kinds of DVD media your burner can burn, if you can. Some older DVD burners could only do one format, and you had DVD-R vs DVD+R.
In general, the newer the burner, the more widely compatible.
I just bought it new (got it for $40 off at Best Buy because I did a little research first--yay!). It has the 1080 upconverting capability, so I'm guessing it's got the up-to-date abilities.
Thanks for the info, Daniel! It looks like I am heading over to Best Buy tomorrow. I'll see what an S-video cable costs online tonight; maybe I can pick one up on ebay cheaper than at BB.
If you just bought it, and it's not a HD-DVD burner, It can probably take the following:
DVD-R
DVD-RW (rewritable)
DVD+R
DVD+RW
DVD Dual-Layer
You can also get dual-sided media for the ±R types, but it's clunky.
Last time I checked, Dual-Layer media wasn't worth the extra expense for what I was doing, YMMV.
Generally I get DVD-R, as it seems more universally compatible, but some people say +R seems to work for DVD players a bit better.
Anyone else that records more have strong opinions?
hey, dreamhost has an extreme deal on hosting:

Wow, that really is a great deal. I'm tempted even though the only domain I really have a use for is already paid up.
Wow. I wonder if I can get that on my current account even though I'm already prepaid for 5 years (from the last time they had a huge sale, but not this big).
95% off? 44 cents per month? I think I'll have to bite, based on this: Top 10 ways to put your remote server to good use
