Where'd they get CAT scan from?... I mean, did they test it on cats? Or does the machine sort of look like a cat?

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Google Throws Open Rival for Wikipedia — Anon Editors Barred

When not thinking about cartoons, Manber spends endless time thinking about how search can be improved. One big reason many searches don't succeed, he believes, is that despite the 20 billion or so Web pages in Google's indexes -- including the 2 million items in Wikipedia -- the information simply isn't there.

For instance, what if you wanted to learn all about Peter Arno, a celebrated New Yorker cartoonist who died in 1968? You wouldn't get lucky. The items appearing in the first page of results give only the barest information on Arno's life and work.

Of course, it's not just information about cartoonists that's missing -- according to Manber there are thousands of black holes when it comes to things searchers want to know. What people need, Manber concluded about a year-and-a-half ago, is the information that would come "when an expert who knows this topic would tell you, if they had 15 minutes to explain."

So Manber began what he refers to as his pet project -- an effort to generate exactly those kind of answers in the top search results. The product, announced Wednesday, is called Knol.

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

Can you change the time of day it does its auto scan?

I'm pretty sure you can. I think I changed it on my install, but I can't check until this evening.

You know, we could experiment and cancel football.

Would someone who has never used a mac have much problem with it? Do macs come with Microsoft office programs like Excel and Powerpoint? What makes a mac superior to a pc at half the price if I have no intention of ever doing anything artsy?

I know you can change the run time on AVG because I have.

Yes you can get office and many alternatives on the Mac. They are exceptionally well built machines. Built well enough that I've purchased three of them to primarily run Windows. Mac OS is reasonably easy to learn as well.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

I did download Open Office, and it seems good. So on my computer, I now have the crappy MS suite (Works, etc), the Office suite (not registered) and Open Office. Should I uninstall any of them, or does it not matter, since I have a lot of storage on my computer?

what everyone else said about changing AVG scan time, but like them i can't check until i get home. i know it took me a little bit to find where they'd hidden it though! sneaky buggers.

oh and i'll add my chorus to those who love their Toshiba notebooks. i've had my Sattelite for a few months now and pretty much love it. don't ever, for the love of GOD(!!!!), buy an HP. i had mine for less than a year and had to send it in five times(!!!) for repairs. it was pretty much the same thing every time. either the wireless card getting "lost" or the screen becoming dark and eventually just completely black.

Yeah, I'm on my third Toshiba. I had the first 2 for about 5 years each.

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

I'm on my second (bought in 06). Though AFAIK the first (from 02) is still running - my sister uses it but since she hasn't had internets for a few months it's basically a paperweight.
