I can handle the Oz Full Monty. I mean, not 'handle' handle.

Lurching from one disaster to the next.

So, I decided to give Ubuntu another go, and I have to say, I'm freakin' stoked. I've just played a card game in Solsuite 2008, had a run in AudioSurf, shot some nazis in Call of Duty 2, and worked on a document in Word2003. Holy Toledo, Buckaroo! This is the first time I've ever had any luck using Wine to make windows only programs work. If this keeps up, I won't need to go back to XP. :)

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

Help! I downloaded some .mkv torrents through Vuze (formerly Azureus). I think they should have subtitles, but they're not showing up when I open them with VLC.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Did the download include a separate subtitles file? If so, you need to open that as well in VLC.

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

No separate subtitles file that I can see, but I'll keep poking around.

I am the fly who dreams of the spider

help! my ability to save/download videos/podcasts/whatnot seems to have disappeared. When the Open/Save window pops up, I hit Save, and then nothing. No option for what location I want to save it to. I've tried Save Target As and again, nothing happens, nothing pops up. This is the third time I've noticed it (the other two I just assumed there was something wonky with the links, but now...)

Has anyone heard of this problem before? Know of any fixes? I don't even know how to phrase the problem succinctly if I were to contact HP tech support (tech support and I, we're not friends).

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Anne,

this is an obvious question, but do you have the subtitle track turned on?

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Julie,

what software are you using? Are you on a pc?

le nub, PC, HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop. I've been able to download tons of things since I got the laptop last year, and I can't think of what software I downloaded in the last month that would affect it like this. A virus or trojan coming in from a website or a download, maybe? I have Trend Micro-Antivirus and Spy Sweeper, and both their expirations are coming up, so maybe I should go with something different?

eta that I also haven't added any new software in the past month or deleted any software in the last month, or even updated any software. Not that I can recall, at least.

I looked for a place to turn it on but didn't see one. I'll dig around in VLC again.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Anne,

it is under the Video menu, Subtitles Track.

Julie,

are you using Firefox to download stuff? If so, close it and restart - that often helps. You also may need to create a new profile if that still doesn't work.

I also think you need to restart your computer.
