Buffistechnology 3: "Press Some Buttons, See What Happens."
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Geekiness aside, that's a really nifty device. I wonder if the idea to make it R2 D2 came early on in the process or later. It seems that the R2 D2ness of it is very useful.

Huh.
You know, my first thought (upon seeing it move across the room to play a DVD) is, does it know how far it is to the wall/screen? Or do you have to focus the projector every time that R2 D2 moves about?
It should really have a sonar or laser range finder to find the distance to the wall (or other projection surface).

Truly we live in a Golden Age.
Also, it seems to me that having R2 D2 be your DVD projector - well, that's an almost trivial use of its abilities. Perhaps it could replace your Roomba as well. Or it could supervise your Roomba, uttering chirps and whistles to tell the Roomba, "You missed a spot. There, in the corner. No, the other corner."
And it's cannon that R2 D2 is capable of serving drinks....

Oh brave new world, that has such geekiana in't!
All it needs is a mini-fridge and it is absolute perfection.

Nah, there's still other abilities that would make it more perfect.
- Feed the cat
- Fix your computer
- Night watchdog (note: will not detect giant killer millipedes)
- Using wifi, go online and make airline reservations, etc.
- When highspeed internet is down, pick up phone, immitate sound of modem to dial into ISP, engage in chat with ISP tech rep to fix your broadband.
- Make appointment for broadband to be fixed, then let repair person in (thus satisfying the "someone must be home" requirement).
Those are nice, I guess.
But I am a simple man. Beer and games is close enough to "perfect" for me.
