Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

Can someone recommend a program to operate another computer remotely? I know there are a number out there. I just lost another hour of my life to tech support by telepathy with my sister. I became very testy, which makes me feel guilty. Of course, this was after I told her exactly what to do and she repeated it after me. Then she called me an hour later with a question and it became obvious that she had not done anything like that.

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

I've used Timbuktu sucessfully, but not recently so there might be better out there.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I just lost another hour of my life to tech support by telepathy with my sister.

Threaten her with a moose-bite.

Now I have to decide if I have sufficient mental energy to talk her through installing the program.

Yes, I use Timbuktu. If you are doing WinXP to WinXP there's some built in screen remote control software but I think the controlling computer needs to be running WinXP Pro if my memory is correct. I'm normally doing it cross platform so I'm pretty fond on Timbuktu. It's about $200 for two machines though. There are some free VNC clients out there if you're willing to do a little initial setup. I remember using WinVNC years ago, but it's been a while since I've looked at the free offerings.

Huh. Wonder if I could access my home computer from work that way.

Oh, wow, that's pretty neat. But I'm a little scared! Is it secure? I mean, I'm essentially giving them remote access to my computer, aren't I?

Another random question from Clueless! Girl!

Is there a way to restrict access to an Access database?

Myself and the other specialists have started a radiocarbon dates database in our office, and we want the other staff to be able to look at the data, but not add or change data. Is that possible?
