I used to store my iTunes files on a remote drive with no problems. The iTunes XML file was stored locally but all the media files were on a remote drive. You can even do the XML file remotely using an aliased iTunes directory.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!

It's a bit of a cheat, but I could do that. Use my PC's iTunes to sync, but have that library be on the Linux box, and the Firefly server pointing at those MP3s.
Cool. Thanks for the ideas.
Daniel - I have a couple of old laptops - one is OOOOOOOLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDDDDD...like Compaq, portable computer old. Do you want items like that too?
I'm mostly trying to update my knowledgebase, and get some hands on tinkering. Basically laptops of this century with a particular interest in dead Powerbooks and MacBooks of the last several years. Not ruling out windows machines, though.
I used to tinker with full sized computers, now it's time to face the portable present.
That and they're easier to hide when company comes.
Can someone recommend a program to operate another computer remotely? I know there are a number out there. I just lost another hour of my life to tech support by telepathy with my sister. I became very testy, which makes me feel guilty. Of course, this was after I told her exactly what to do and she repeated it after me. Then she called me an hour later with a question and it became obvious that she had not done anything like that.
I love logmein.com.
Logmein Free is free!
I've used Timbuktu sucessfully, but not recently so there might be better out there.

Threaten her with a moose-bite.
Now I have to decide if I have sufficient mental energy to talk her through installing the program.
ND uses Timbuktu. He'd probably have an opinion.
t /really not remotely helpful

Yes, I use Timbuktu. If you are doing WinXP to WinXP there's some built in screen remote control software but I think the controlling computer needs to be running WinXP Pro if my memory is correct. I'm normally doing it cross platform so I'm pretty fond on Timbuktu. It's about $200 for two machines though. There are some free VNC clients out there if you're willing to do a little initial setup. I remember using WinVNC years ago, but it's been a while since I've looked at the free offerings.
