Friends moving to Japan (and on the way home visiting China, Indian, Korea, several African nations, and Greece and Rome.
Should they buy their international cellphone here, or would they be better off getting one on the plane. I suspect that regardless, they will have to buy extra sims during part of their trip. True?
If they do buy a phone here, which one should they get?
Digital video camera - buy here or wait until they get to Japan? Unlike a phone, there is no question of needing one for the trip. They can use their still camera until they get to Japan if buying it there would make more sense.
Also, what kind of digital videocam should they buy, regardless of where they buy it?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.
They'll need an unlocked GSM phone. That's what will be sold by default abroad--I figure you can get those here as long as you go to a cellphone store and not a carrier's outlet. It may be possible to do the whole trip on one SIM--that has the advantage of having just the one phone number and minimising the effort of going shopping. Changing SIMs will be cheaper, and for a stay of a week or more, I'd do it.
Japan will have the best phones, though. The market's equalising, but they started out ahead of Europe which was ahead of us.
Couldn't recommend a phone without knowing what they'd want to do with it. I just wouldn't spend much money on it here.

We had one of those! My brother and I used it to carry our James Blish books of adaptations of Star Trek episodes.
