They'll need an unlocked GSM phone. That's what will be sold by default abroad--I figure you can get those here as long as you go to a cellphone store and not a carrier's outlet. It may be possible to do the whole trip on one SIM--that has the advantage of having just the one phone number and minimising the effort of going shopping. Changing SIMs will be cheaper, and for a stay of a week or more, I'd do it.
Japan will have the best phones, though. The market's equalising, but they started out ahead of Europe which was ahead of us.
Couldn't recommend a phone without knowing what they'd want to do with it. I just wouldn't spend much money on it here.
Feh! I have finally uploaded all of my CDs. Even with judicious editing of various songs, it can no longer sync because I have too much music. Feh! It's only 10 gig! I NEED the 16 gig iPhone. DON'T TELL ME I DON'T KNOW WHAT VIETNAM WAS LIKE!!
I feel your pain. My iTunes library is now north of 200 GB and the largest iPod made is only 160.

We had one of those! My brother and I used it to carry our James Blish books of adaptations of Star Trek episodes.
But we didn't use it to carry our books to friends' houses, on account of all the blizzards (both ways).
So I screwed up on an ahem and ended up with rar files. How do I join them all up again?
Are you on Mac or Windows, Suela? Either way, you need the un-rar-ing software, but it's free and reliable and easy, so if you post your system details, I'm sure we can help with links.
So I'm learning how to use the stuff on my new computer, but I haven't found a way to read newsgroups. Is there a way to do that using Safari or the Mail program in OS X? If not, what program should I look for?
