Nobody here has an Apple TV, do they?

I have an Apple TV. What Tom says is accurate.

Are they any good, NoiseDesign?

I like mine just for the simplicity of getting my downloaded content onto my big screen.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Should I not ask where the content is downloaded from, ND?

How does one control an AppleTV? I know there's an Apple remote, but it doesn't have that many buttons--is it like typing on a TiVo?

Actually pretty much all of my content is downloaded from iTunes or ripped from DVDs that I own. Remember I'm the guy that's the stick in the mud about copyright issues since it actually has an impact on my work.

Yes, everything is done through the little remote, so typing is similar to Tivo.

At the minute I stream my content from my iMac to my TV using an Xbox 360. I have something called Connect360 on my Mac, which shares all my movies and music to the Xbox seamlessly. It's brill.

The problem is it can share downloaded stuff fine -- DivX and Xvid play fine -- but it can't play legally downloaded stuff from iTunes. So I may end up with an AppleTV box for that.

True that.

It's funny--my sister asked me how long it took me to download a movie, and I was halfway through answering her when I realised I don't download movies. I can buy them, so why bother? She, on the other hand, downloads (or has someone with more bandwidth download for her) furiously. Living in Jamaica restricts what she can watch in the theatre and what she can buy, even over the internet.

Does that sort of thing chap you?

To be honest, I tend to not overly worry about it. I buy movies and music and use them the way that I'm ethically comfortable. I don't allow friends to copy my music, and if pressed with explain why I feel the way I do about it. I try to let other folks do as they are going to do and only control the aspects of the situation that are directly under my ability to control. Hopefully, once in a while, people will see how I deal with the issue and it might give them pause to think. That's about all I can really hope for.

Maintains and displays internal consistency without trying to enforce external compliance.

Perfectly reasonable in all the best senses of the words.

Unrelatedly, this is a great button to have on your web site. Or even your blog.
