Sophia, you can search something like:

-is:starred -from:Buffy -from:Xander -from:Willow

You'll still get the search results 20 to a page, which is craptastic, but you should be able to delete everything on those pages without as much close attention.

in some ways, I'd advise you to make a category for all that you do not want to delete and then delete everything else.

See, I sort of did that already, but I can't figure out how to delete everything NOT labeled something, only things that ARE labeled.

I have gotten down to about 3000, so not so terrible now!

-in:inbox is how you identify all messages not in the inbox.

I have a label called z-done. If I want to identify all messages that aren't z-done, I'd type:

-label:z-done

Hey now, being a Linux geek myself I can tell you that Linux gmail design is unfair. Not only would there be a command line version with 500 options, there would also be a brown GNOME version with two buttons and no features and a blue KDE version with 10,000 configuration options.
