Will fsck do anything for me that Disk Utility can't?
Wouldn't hurt to try. At least it will give more verbose error messages.
How can I tell if this is hardware-related (ie don't buy Leopard and start from scratch)?
Look in /var/log/messages, (or use the Console.app utility), and see if there have been disk errors that have been logged.
Any recommendations on cheap/free software to rip DVDs so I can watch my movies on my pretty new Nano? I'm on a MacBook Pro.

Wow. Middle of the night x-post.
After Making a mini maglight into a working laser, what do you do for an encore?
Make a Star Trek Phaser prop into a Blu-ray-powered laser, of course.

I figured that would happen.
I have a problem I hope someone here can help me with. In the last couple weeks when I read lj I frequently have computer freeze-ups or lose input from the keyboard(the mouse works fine). I don't know if it's a browser problem(I'm using Netscape 7.0 for the Mac) or a computer problem(I have a 6+ year old iMac running System 9.1).
If it's a browser problem, is there anything I can do about it, or are there any other/better browsers that will run on my computer?
(I really don't want to buy a new computer right now, as I've had a lot of expenses in the last few months that have eaten away at my bank account)
I've been having some weird freeze-ups when viewing tv in the 'net Sheryl, and I'm beginning to suspect my 6+ year old eMac's 700MHz processor of just being too darned slow.
I'm with you with the not buying a new machine right now, so I'm just opting for patience.
t /by no means a technical assessment
On a related note, I have a quick question regarding dinosaur adaptability.
In addition to my i & e Macs, I have a Powerbook g3 that has been on the shelf for years. Started right up just now, bless it.
My question is, how can I network the laptop and the eMac together? Or simply transfer files from the powerbook to the eMac?
I'm spending a lot of time away from home this week and would like to take the opportunity to get a huge writing project done for my new website.
I am fine with doing all the writing in simpletext on the laptop and then formatting everything on the eMac later.
Problem is, the laptop has no usb ports.
I've got an external zip disk and a smart disk reader, but both of them are usb.
My neworking cable has bits that don't plug into the eMac.
I also have a Sony Spresso, external cd, but can't figure out if it can be of any use.
And a Lacie d2 cd/dvd burner...but I can't see how that could help either.
Sidenote, the place I'll be staying has a only a decade old pc and a pokey dial-up, so emailing files might not work either.
Any ingenious workarounds possible?
Does the powerbook have firewire?
