Hey. New board.

My dock is on the left side. I want Leopard, mostly for the under-the-hood stuff that is lusted over at the Ars Technica review [link] despite being "meh" on most of the interface stuff. Though Spaces is fun - I miss Virtual Desktops, but I'm not sure I'll use them what with Expose - I do hate that dock (even the on-the-side version) and the translucent menu bar.

However, I am only capable of using my computer right now by using some weird keyboard-hacking programs (otherwise, I have no ctrl or option key: a mistake made with a water bottle a few months ago means I must remap them) that I must make sure works before even considering upgrading the laptop. And besides, I'm strongly considering buying a Macbook as soon as they update them, so I may as well wait for that for my leopard fix.

I too use a left-side Dock -- I was surprised that there weren't any at Lifehacker.Org's Show Us Your Dock pictures.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

Come to think of it, left-side makes more sense than right-side, as the scroll bars are on the right.

So who else auto-hides the dock? I do - mostly to maximize limited screen real estate on a 13" MacBook.

Is there a way to hook up an iPod straight to the car stereo's speakers?

I ask because I've had my stereo stolen for the third time, and I really only ever listen to NPR, which I listen to all day at work. If I leave all the guts of the stereo hanging out, perhaps it will serve as a deterrent.

DJ, you could do something sneaky like leave the wires hanging out, and set up a new car stereo inside the glove compartment? or maybe just the attachment-dock for the iPod.....

You'd need an amp of some sort (as an iPod doesn't put out the power to handle the car speakers itself).

or buy a car amplifier with a input cable hidden in the glove box for the iPod, or some such. If you don't want/need the tuner, no need to get a fancy schmany "reciever" car stereo. I'm sure if you take it to a car stereo shop and say "I want it to look like I have nothing but stolen guts here" they could accommodate you.

I want to avoid having to get another stereo. It seems like there should be a way to just use the speakers, I just don't know how.

I think this is the answer I'm looking for. Does it need to be a car amp? I think we have a couple dozen amps around the house.

ha, x-post with tommy.

Ya, the problem is, the speakers you have now need to have an amplified source. So, you can get a small car amplifier. Depending on your vehicle, it can sit behind the dash or under a seat, etc. If your not looking to make windows rattle, it won't be very large. It's just a matter of wiring it up.
