Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
This is a silly, stupid question, but USB ports on laptops are the same size they are on desktops, right? That is, I can plug an external desktop HD into a laptop with a USB cable?
What amych and omnis said. The flat end of your USB cable will plug into any other flat USB port on any computer. It's the other end that's a little device dependant.
Oh, and since I'm here....
I was looking at downloading OpenOffice for my new (well, new to me) Mac Mini, and now I'm very confused as to what "Aqua" is.
Aqua is the name of the interface that mac uses (I think that's a good way of describing it). For the mac, look into NeoOffice. It's built on the OpenOffice platform, but it's a standalone app, rather than using X-11.
More on Aqua here:

Sean, It's the mac native user interface standard -- earlier versions of OO for the mac were (oops, X11), which meant that all the menus and dialogs took forever to load; the one you're looking at has the same functionality but with more mac-like rendering of the obvious-to-look-at stuff.
(Although I still like NeoOffice better)
(eta: awesome nerdy x-post)
Right, I'll be checking out Neo Office, then!
P-C, the only I would warn you about is that some hard drives require more power than a USB port can give. So you might have to get an external power source.
I am not sure how common this is, but just an FYI in case you encounter problems.
Steve Jobs just announced that there will be 3rd party apps on the iPhone next year: [link]

The external drive needs to be plugged in anyway.

I've been pretty certain about this eventually happening.
in a fit of boredom during a very slow tech rehearsal, I almost purchased an iPhone on line. Apparently you can't get it engraved like the regular ipods?!? Screw that, I'll buy one local and have instant gratification!
So, um. Question. What accesories do the iPhone/peer presssure folks recomend? Is the belkin headphone extender worth it? I've seen bad reviews. What about a skin or belt carry case thingie? any thing to avoid? anything you like?
