Our wings are not tired

Nothing bad happens. Apple doesn't do that level of copy protection on their software.

I make it a habit to always buy the family packs because Apple makes it so easy to get the 5 license pack for less that the price of two licenses so I'm happy to spend the little extra money and stay legal, and to encourage Apple to continue this practice. If a company makes it affordable, easy, and reasonable to stay legal then I will certainly do it.

omnis, pursue. That's an order from a shy woman who can use M-16. - Shir

I agree. We must encourage reasonable prices on stuff. Plus, I'm a huge Apple fan, and wants them to stay alive.

hip deep in pie

I knew when I bought my new Nano last month that there was likely a new line of iPods coming soon, but I didn't think there would be such a price drop. The new 8G Nanos are Cdn $80 cheaper than the old ones. Damn me and my bad timing!

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

I was unable to install my copy of Tiger onto DH's computer, fwiw -- it wouldn't recognize the serial number. (When Leopard comes out I'll probably just shell out for the family pack.)

It also occured to me late yesterday that with the new unlocking options for the iPhone (and of course the price drop), there's really no reason for me to want an iPod Touch instead. Hmmm.

GF and I love our iPhones but I gotta say, it burns to have such a price reduction after only a couple of months. It figures the first time I'm an "early adopter" I get pretty suckered. I thought it'd be at least 6 months before there'd be a price drop or new iPhone, and even then I didn't think it'd drop $200. Kinda shady. At least I do love it.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

How are the iPod unlocking methods coming along? I read that the (or perhaps one of the) software ones is being touted as illegal, and they're selling it weirdly (you have to be a "reseller" and buy in bulk) to get it. And that the hardware one is a bitch.

There's a SIM one too, and if it's complete, I don't see why anyone bothers with the other two.

Hmm. Family pack. I could buy my mini now, and then upgrade that and my laptop when Leopard comes out.

Buying an OS. How quaint.

As I understand it, circumventing copyright in order to unlock your phone is specifically *allowed* under the DMCA, but AT&T is claiming that it's illegal to *sell* the unlocking software (even if it's not illegal to use it). The problem with their argument is that there are existing legal businesses where you can pay someone to unlock your phone (including many other phones sold by AT&T), and they're only challenging the legality of selling software to unlock iPhones. They don't seem to have a leg to stand on other than having more money for lawyers than the software developers.

Exactly! If you go by that logic, you'd never buy any shiny new toys.

See, I know that. However, Jilli's phone is less than 2 years old, and her iPod isn't even 10 months old. So, she gets to wait.

Some iTouch stuff: iPod Touch Can Run All Apple and Third-Parties' iPhone Apps

You may be asking yourself where are Mail, Weather, Google Maps or Stocks in the new iPod touch. The answer: they are coming, but probably not from Apple. The iPod runs Mac OS X like the iPhone does and we have got unofficial word from inside Apple that it runs exactly the same applications. The exact quote: "they use the same damn binaries."

For some unknown reason, Apple decided not to include Mail, Weather and Stocks in the iPod touch, perhaps trying to separate both devices. Looking at the application mix, the iPod touch seems more entertainment-oriented while the JesusPhone extends itself into the communication hub/personal productivity area.

This is an artificial differentiation, however. Both gadgets use exactly the same core operating system and programming frameworks. The only differentiating aspects are in some of the user interface elements.

Trust my rage

I do feel a bit taken advantage of now that my iPhone is suddenly so much cheaper, although beating my brother and cousin in having one was almost worth it.
