Plex problem. I can't connect to the internet at large, so I can't access my library from work (or anywhere away from home). The first few weeks, no problem. But now? Nada. I thought it might be a double router issue, so I patched the media center computer directly into the FiOS router (rather than my old airport extreme). No luck. So today I noticed something weird. I was downloading an ahem file (DVR deleted S2e1 of Supergirl), and it said "use a VPN, your location is Canada". Um. What? So I look at my Plex status, and copy the IP address to the internet, and search for it on google, and sure enough, it says I'm in Canada. Curious. Um. No. California. Just a leeetle bit different.

So? Given that I'm not using a VPN, and not in Canada. What would cause my ip address to think I'm in Canada??

I use MSE, too, and like it. The only thing is that I'm not sure if they still call it that. It might be Windows Defender now.

Looks like MSE is available for Windows 7. Windows Defender (the same thing for the most part) is included with Windows 8 and 10.

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

I use the Windows Defender that came with Win10, but I also use Malwarebytes.

IP geolocation is a bit inexact. There could incorrect data in the database.

traceroute might tell you some interesting stuff.

Interesting thing tonight. I checked a couple different places. I got:

  • Freemont, CA (wrong)
  • Pomona, CA (closer, but wrong)
  • Los Angeles (well, county, yes, city, no)
  • Long Beach, CA (practically right, my lil city is a pimple in the middle of Long Beach)
  • Unavailable
  • and the ahem site still says Canada
  • Speedtest by Ookla correctly identifies Frontier Communications, but says location is Los Angeles.

Trace route said Frontier in Pomona.
