If your needs aren't very complex, there's also the web version of Word that comes along with a free Skydrive account. It's actually pretty good.

Is the Student and Home version of Word available for Mac? It's reasonably priced, not cheap, but reasonable. It includes three licenses.
The version of OO I have doesn't save as .docx.
It sounds like you will actually need a real copy of Word for the type of commenting and markup that you are doing. These areas are almost always where the cheaper options can't do full compatibility.
Quite honestly I like the interface of pre-ribbon word better than just about anything. The one exception is Pages, but since I don't have a Mac Pages is not an option for me.
