I know it's a hassle, but I would recommend going to an Apple store and having one of the Geniuses look at it - sounds like you may have gotten a dud. I've never seen any of the issues you're describing on any of my iOS devices.

Found the Nook app ... I suspect there may be something wrong with it - I was reading the manual and in a couple of places it referred to an icon that wasn't showing up.
grrrr
But thanks for the help (and support).
Does the mini have a significantly different set of applications available for it?
I don't know - this is my first experience with any Apple product.
As far as I know the Mini runs all the regular iOS apps for iPad and iPhone.
Speaking of iOS, is there a way to schedule iMessage? (i.e. write a message now but schedule it to be sent tomorrow morning)
I'm sure there are apps that do this, just wondering if it can be done natively on an iPhone without Siri.
the mini runs most/all of the apps the ipad does and a good percentage of the apps for iphone. some iphone apps you can put on the mini and have them run in a bigger more pixelated view, but they work. some iphone apps will not install at all on a mini.
I don't think in this early stage you would have a problem with the latter category.
here is a list of good ipad apps (there are about 4 on the list of 13 I couldn't bother with, but fyi: [link]
here is a link to macworld's starter guide. it is $4.

It is functionally identical to an iPad 2. The processor is the same and the screen runs at the same resolution just with a high pixel density due to the smaller screen.
Well, I'm uber-perplexed by the problems Toddson is having, then. What would be the cause for her seeing limited apps?
a bad unit.
