I'm making progress ... I guess. Managed to take a photo and send it. I can play solitaire and free cell.
I still can't find the Nook app.
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!

I looked in the iTunes store, and the Nook app is still there. I have no idea why it won't show up for you.
grrrr
However, I'm no longer tempted to just trash the thing ... which is significant progress.
Unfortunately I can't explain why things aren't showing up in the App store for you. I checked on 3 of my iPads and Nook is turning up on all of them.
I know it's a hassle, but I would recommend going to an Apple store and having one of the Geniuses look at it - sounds like you may have gotten a dud. I've never seen any of the issues you're describing on any of my iOS devices.
Found the Nook app ... I suspect there may be something wrong with it - I was reading the manual and in a couple of places it referred to an icon that wasn't showing up.
grrrr
But thanks for the help (and support).
Does the mini have a significantly different set of applications available for it?
I don't know - this is my first experience with any Apple product.
As far as I know the Mini runs all the regular iOS apps for iPad and iPhone.
Speaking of iOS, is there a way to schedule iMessage? (i.e. write a message now but schedule it to be sent tomorrow morning)
I'm sure there are apps that do this, just wondering if it can be done natively on an iPhone without Siri.
