ita, to answer your problem from earlier, yes I had the same problem with large numbers of files in a commond directory on that NAS. It is appentaly a know flaw with them. I use it as a scratch drive when I'm handbraking things before I move them to my actual library volume. When I had everything in one common directory it could take minutes for directories to popluate. When I broke things down by season and movie, then the speed picked right up.

smonster,
gah. some suggestions here including a free program to download. I make no claims about any of the suggestions.
le n, none of that looks helpful. My phone is on and in recovery mode; I can start the recovery process but it won't complete. I'd like to dl a fresh version of ios6 and try again since my internet has been a bit wonky but I can't figure out how to do that.
Here are links for all the iOS. [link] You may have to google to find out which one you need. I can help you later if you can't find it.
Thanks, le n. I'm going to download a fresh copy and try one more time, and then head to the Apple store if that doesn't work. I can't be without a phone.
make an appt at the apple store anyway. you can always cancel.
Bad news - dead. Good news - I got apple care for 2 yrs, so i'm good.
Apple care seems to be one of those warranties that's worth it--but surely that implies the hardware fails...
Still, it seems much simpler than any other program to get back into gear with--I still remember the woman who replaced my hard drive after water damage for free because she couldn't see definite signs of water damage-even though I told her what had happened.
Well, I've had the phone for almost a year and a half, and I drop it and expose it to sawdust daily, so I can't complain. Yay lifeproof case.
