Buffistechnology 3: "Press Some Buttons, See What Happens."
Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
I need some computer help. My computer won't update the Windows Service Pack and Security updates. There are 7 that aren't updating. I didn't realize this until recently.
I have Windows 7 64 bit and I'm not sure how to fix these error codes. I've tried searching online but I'm not finding help.
anyone have any suggestions?
Askye, don't know. Maybe you could post the error codes.
Also I have a question. It looks like Windows 8
1) Has a slightly lighter footprint than Windows 7
2) Will work without a touchscreen, but the interface is a pain without one - in practice you really should have touchscreen if you are going to use windows 8.
3) Will currently run in the desktop anything that runs on windows 7
4) Has poor integration between the desktop and the 'modern ui' apps.
Can someone explain OS X networking to me? When I look in Finder, Lucille (the NAS) has two shares--neither of which I can write to, despite having authenticated and one of them being my user's home directory.
If I
Go
to smb://Lucille/Oracle booyah! I can see all those folders, and I can write to them (I'm authenticated as the owner as well has explicitly granted full access). For a few minutes, though. The Lucille goes back to showing me read only Backup_BA and ita.
Is that AFP? Why would one protocol be muscling out the other? I also have CIFS and NFS enabled for the share and the media service--but let's not go into how random the files that show up under music are.
I mount it using the BlackArmour tool, and it works a little bit better for a little longer while I try and copy 100 files over, but it doesn't last--I end up with an 8058 error intermittently interrupting. Oh--and now it's listed under Shared by both Lucille and the IP address.
Does any of this confusion make sense to anyone?
Typo boy here are two of the error codes:
Error details: Code 80073701
Error details: Code 800736B3
What happens when you mount it as afp://Lucille/Oracle and nfs://Lucille/Oracle ? Can you just disable afp on the NAS?
Can you just disable afp on the NAS?
Even if there was that option (it's not in the web management tool), that would break the Time Capsule backups.
Oh, and all the settings are the same as the original NAS, which did and still does all of this perfectly--but afp
is
broken on it, therefore no backups, so that's why I have a replacement.
- afp://Lucille/Oracle -- server may not exist
- afp://192.168.1.122/Oracle -- share does not exist on this server
- afp://192.168.1.122 -- takes me into the BACKUP_BA where Time Capsule is saving backups, I can't access any other shares or directories
- nfs://Lucille/Oracle -- Problem connecting to the server "Lucille". The share does not exist on the server
- nfs://Lucille(/) -- Problem connecting to the server "Lucille". The share does not exist on the server
- nfs://192.168.1.122/Oracle -- There was a problem connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address
- nfs://192.168.1.122/ -- There was a problem connecting to the server. Check the server name or IP address
I can't work out why any of this should be different wired v. wireless, but that's my next test. The test after that will likely involve defenestration of one party or another, at this rate.
So it looks like my much loved dvr/dvd player/burner (from Omnis, thanks Omnis!) will pass through but no longer pick-up the Comcast video signal for broadcast. (I gave up cable.)
Am I right in thinking that one can't find the same in HD/blu ray in the US? I can live without the burner, but I'd like to record broadcast, even in SD.
Or, is there some sort of "component out" on my Smart TV that I'm not seeing (it seems to have out connections for audio only)?
ita, I don't really understand why you're getting Read Only, but I will say that Time Machine backups work fine over SMB. I use them all the time. You have to modify some preference in the finder so that Time Machine will show you the volume, but after that it works just as well as over AFP. At least, my current DD-WRT router and external HD over SMB setup works just as well as my old Airport Extreme + external HD setup did.

It's not like I can turn off AFP--just that the main reason they were quick to ship a replacement was that the AFP was dead, leading to no Time Capsule.
If I could get Time Capsule working on the old one without AFP *and* the media service worked, I might even send back the new one, but it would worry me that AFP was just the first domino.
I want a NAS that does everything it says on the box.
I'm offloading a ton o stuff and have rounded up a bunch of obsolete software.
Are there any good things one can do with:
- Illustrator 8
- Pagemaker 6.5
- Toast Titanium 5
- iLife '06
- Techtools Pro3.0.6
I've also got a Sharon Stever Step-by-Step book with cd for Illustrator 6.
No local schools are interested, sadly.
eta: I should also mention that I have all the manuals and, in the case of Freehand, Pagemaker and Toast are in original packaging.
