Is there a way to customize the Google services that appear in the top bar thingy? I have less than no use for a Play link, but would very much like to see Reader up there.

Dammit. I think I might need to dive deeper into Tasker. I want to work out how to conditionally read some things aloud. Just, in general--say want the phone to say the number of the caller if it doesn't know the name. Or tell me when certain emails (or from certain senders) arrive. Read me certain SMS messages.
Before I start chasing my tail--does anyone know if there's anything in the market that does that? My phone does already announce who's calling, which is such an energy saver. Group ringtones tell me if I need to get near enough to hear, and then I get the specifics if I want.
A time capsule shouldn't do anything to interfere.
I'm afraid I'm stumped.

On a computer, or a phone, or in a Chrome browser, or what?

In the browser. In Gmail, Calendar and Reader (the three Google tabs I have open now) there's a black bar at the top of the screen with links to other Google services. Some of them I'll never use, and Reader is stuck in a "More" dropdown.
Thanks for trying, Rob. I think something like this happened before and cleared up when something outside my control changed ro updated or something. So I'll hope that happens again.
My other computers are not cooperating (one won't find the internet, the other won't even boot. I haven't turned either on in a while, those are not surprising results), but I fired up Parallels and tried Chrome in emulated XP and that was no better.

Sorry, all I've been able to learn is that it is called the "Google bar." [link]
Haven't found any way to customize or configure it.
I would like my phone to do that stuff too, ita !, but I don't know of anything in the market that does it neatly. I haven't really put much energy into looking, though.
Announcify does some of it, but I couldn't get it to work at all on my Transformer. It's what announces callers on my phone, though.

Apparently (I haven't tried it), there's a Chrome extension:
