I must obey the inscrutable exhortations of my soul—Calvin and Hobbs

Yep--I thought I'd try Cydia and MyWi from this LifeHacker article: [link]

I really only need to use my phone as a wifi hotspot for my iPad about three days of the year (otherwise I'm in places where I have access to other wifi sources), so it didn't make sense to shell out the extra for a dataplan on the iPad. And Apple doesn't have an official hotspot option for the 3GS, so jailbreaking seems like the best option.

ETA: Thanks, Gris. I did a dual backup this morning (the phone's usual one and another backup to an external drive).

An open office draw file is getting too big. If I start splitting it into multiple files is there a way to combine them at the end. That is add pages from one draw file into another?

Well, drat. The only jailbreaks for iOS5 are tethered. As I'm not taking my computer, this won't work. Oh, we'll. It's only two days and change, and I'll still have my phone.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Just throwing this out there with the random hope someone knows.

When I asked for help selecting a repeater to extend my parents wireless network, I explicitly said something that plugs into the wall and extends the wireless network. Out of the box, the ASUS RT-N13U that the sales guy recommended does not do that. But he knew I intended to flash it. It catches the wireless signal, and extends that. I'm now test blasting my home network everywhere. Booyah!

I was planning to install dd-wrt on them, but I've been lazy so far. And, really, wondering if I need to, if it will do it simply out of the box. But I'd *really* like to extend the network by connecting the unit to a drop. That way, I can put it in an out-of-reach area, and have it beam in all directions. My logic tells me I stand a chance of covering more area that way. And if I end up with pockets inbetween the three bubbles of connectivity, so be it.

Will dd-wrt give me this ability? For sure? I've started reading, and I can't work it out. I was just wondering if anyone knew for sure...

Because if it doesn't, I don't think there's a point flashing them.

information libertarian

I have no idea what ita ! is talking about, but I do have an amusing mental image of her, naked underneath a trench coat, opening he coat while facing her wireless router.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Dylan's iPod seems to have died suddenly. It won't power on at all. I'm charging it now, and have been for about 45 minutes, with no response. I've tried resetting it (holding down both buttons) several times. I've plugged it in while holding down the menu button.

Basically, I've done everything I can think of that's been suggested on the internet. Anybody have any really clever ideas I haven't found yet? It's an iPod Touch 4G.

"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

How large an area are you needing to cover? I think you may find you have plenty of range extending the wireless. It's true that you need to have an overlapping edge in order to catch the wireless. And it's also true that pulling the wired drop should have let you do what you want. I am not, in fact, familiar with either the specific model or the protocol about which you're asking, but I should be able to poke around and see.

Pull and replace the battery? Is that a doable thing?

The current covered area is about 1/3 of the house. If I have to place each wireless repeater inside the wireless range of another, that doesn't get me all the way through the house. I'm still reading, but I'm dizzy.

I don't think they're user-replaceable. (And I'd still have to go to the Apple Store to get a replacement battery.)
