What app do you use to do this? On my old iPhone I used Talkatone (which is essentially a Google Talk app that will connect with its voice service) but I haven't found something similar for android...

that's a good recommendation but I fucking hate the font. I am not sure why I am having such a negative reaction to the font, but that's where it is. I'm going to use it for awhile longer to see if my hate lessens.

If you're using Chrome, it's fucking easy to change it. ;)
Click on the Stylish icon, and then edit, and you'll see the font-face css.
The new look on the Google apps seem okay to me if I set the display density to compact (the other settings have too much spacing for my liking).
IMO, I like the aesthetics of the new style better, but the old style seems a bit better in terms of functionality. So a big, eh, overall.
