Giles, if you would like to get by in American society, then you are going to have to follow our traditions. You're the patriarch. You have to host the festivities, or it's all meaningless.

Skipping to the end to ask y'all if there's a good place online that lines up the various tablets that are available and compares them side-by-side?

I was just talking with Mom, and it sound like she's interested in getting one for herself this Christmas, and might be up for getting me one, too!

IIRC, B&N is going to be announcing their own tablet sometime this week, right?

Isn't the color Nook essentially a tablet?

If you just want reading tablets, a while back Smart Bitches did one--but it was long enough ago that you couldn't yet borrow from the library on a kindle, nor had the most recent kindles come out. So it's kind of out of date. But one of the things I've read basically says that for a lot of the book-type tablets, a lot of it comes down to personal preference on how you like it to feel/weigh, besides the obvious issues you might read about, so you should try to hold one.

That's what I thought, but I read somewhere that they're going to be introducting a competitor to the new Kindle Fire, which I think is more a competitor to the iPad, right?

My mom is apparently looking for one with all the bells and whistles on it--she actually thought that tablets also did phone stuff, which I corrected her on. I was thinking about buying one for myself after Xmas anyway, but Mom told me that her brother just gave all of his siblings a little financial present, so she's going to be spending more on Chrismtas this year and is willing to pay for mine--yay!

I told her I'd either find or put together a comparison chart for all the tablet options for both of us before we shop for ourselves.

Yeah, that's why I said if you want just reading tablets--but if you want one that is more iPad-ish, then there are tons of choices and options and whatnot.

brillig

I'm having trouble with an old-ish 4 gig flash drive that I use to transfer files from work to home and vice versa. I've never had any problems until I got my new 64-bit laptop at home, but now I frequently get messages saying there were problems found when I plug it in on the 32-bit system at work. Are there issues with using a flash drive between 64-bit and 32-bit, or is this just a sign I need a new flash drive?

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

I unzipped a dmg file on my mac and then tried to mount it. Mounting froze. Force quitting finder didn't work--it never quit. I tried to restart, but I'm just getting the spinny wheel. I'm unused to having to have to troubleshoot macs. Other than continuing trying to restart, what's on the menu?

Well, a couple more ons and offs took care of that, but I realise I don't know thing freaking one about troubleshooting OS X, and I'm rapidly getting out of touch with Windows as the version numbers increase and I use it less and less.

This is how we turn into our parents, isn't it?
