Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

.I've actually never used skype

I feel misled and betrayed.

...it's kinda tingly.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Sj,

There also is a new service that will allow you to rent a phone in the UK for the duration. I have not checked prices so it may be really expensive. Later I will find the website.

Thanks. I'll check it out when you find the link.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I guess I could just go without a cell and use the hotel phones for local calls, but I can't really imagine not having one on me. I will have my computer although I don't know if the hotels will all have wifi.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

I was talking to someone who'd gone recently and said it was really affordable to just buy a phone over there and buy a little bit of airtime.

Thanks, Dana. We're going to be in London first so I am sure we could find a place easily enough.

Clark Howard suggests buying a phone when you get there, particularly if you're only going to be in one country. He mentioned this place [link]

sj, you can also see if one of your friends has an old AT&T phone that they've upgraded from that you can borrow. I kept my old RAZR to use in Europe, all I need to do is buy a sim card and top up the minutes.

Not so nice is that I'm about to ruin a Friday morning for a bunch of people because of a series of unfortunate events and an upset foreign government. - shrift

Would you get the hell out of my head? That's exactly what I did. The SIM cards live in the same travel wallet that hold my passports.

Um, sorella, we are damn near the same person. Basically, I'm just taller.

Sj,

I cannot find the service through my bookmarks, but I will look again later. Here is an article that might be of some use to you.
