To make phone calls as well as its other functions?

Yes, though of course they charge you whatever they charge (which is less than phone companies).

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Are the rates the same for calls if you're not a US user? I'm trying to work out how to save my sister money on communication.

No clue--I'm only speaking of doing this via Skype-on-your-phone, which you brought over from the US and are using with WiFI.

But you're the Skype expert!

Hah! ...no, I'm the "using wifi on your phone in foreign countries" expert! ...I've actually never used skype.

I feel misled and betrayed.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

Sj,

There also is a new service that will allow you to rent a phone in the UK for the duration. I have not checked prices so it may be really expensive. Later I will find the website.

Thanks. I'll check it out when you find the link.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I guess I could just go without a cell and use the hotel phones for local calls, but I can't really imagine not having one on me. I will have my computer although I don't know if the hotels will all have wifi.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

I was talking to someone who'd gone recently and said it was really affordable to just buy a phone over there and buy a little bit of airtime.

Thanks, Dana. We're going to be in London first so I am sure we could find a place easily enough.
