Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Have you considered the MacBook Air? It's awesome? (And starts at $1000.)
I don't like Macs (takes cover from the deluge). I understand that they are technically better, I just don't like them.
As for portability, I should have said that I want something small that can fit into my purse (which is a small tote). Also, I didn't want to spend that much, maybe $500 or $600
11" Macbook Air, for sure.
The fucking thing is only 2.4 pounds or so. I don't even notice the weight when I carry mine in its shoulder bag.

Ah, gotcha. I wasn't sure since you mentioned iPad as a possibility.
[eta: I'm also not sure it's fair to say Macs are "technically better" across the board, but I covet the 11" Air like nobody's business. It's SO FUCKING PRETTY.]
Are there any Windows laptops that have a full-size keyboard but ditch the optical drive to save weight? Otherwise, the one Gud linked to is 4 lbs, which isn't too bad.
I covet the Air pretty badly too, and I'm still deliriously in love with my 15" MacBook Pro. There's entirely no point for me to even look at it. Except--so pretty!
I'm getting my sister an iTouch, so I'll probably take this opportunity to finally upgrade my iPod one way or another. That needs to sate me.
I don't need a full sized keyboard, I just don't like the touchpad thing because you either have to type with one or two fingers or lay it down flat and loom over it. Both of which I find annoying. And touchpads don't like me for some reason, they are less responsive to me than other people. I mean they work, but I feel as if I'm always slamming my finger on the screen.
The thing I don't like about netbooks is that they tend to have very slow processors and limited memory for not much less money than a regular notebook.
It IS possible to run MS Windows on a MacBook Air...

They're generally adequate for web browsing, word processing, etc. If that's all you need it for, they're fine.
My netbook sometimes had problems playing video though.
I was looking at Mac notebooks at Best Buy the other day, and the amount of wasted space on the portion where the keyboard is annoyed me. It looks like they wanted to give you a place to put your coffee cup instead of giving you a good-sized keyboard. Closed, they're kind of nifty looking, but open not so much.
