Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
But Finder hangs.
What protocol are you telling Finder to use?

Where do I do that? In case it happens again--I rebooted it, and it found it.
By the way, sometimes one of my boxes (Zoe) falls off the fileshare network to Finder. It's on, and I can ping it, but it doesn't appear in Finder reliably. It's a bit erratic. It goes to sleep, but shouldn't it appear in Finder shortly after I wake it up?
Vortex, congrats on the tv. I did buy a little Samsung for my bedroom in December, but my best friend's 18-month old 52" Samsung is already on the fritz! She called me desperate this morning to see if she can come to my place and watch the Oscars. (on my still-going-strong-bought off Craigslist Philips 37").
If you use the "Connect to Server" menu item you use the url to control it; smb for Window-style shares, afp for old school AppleShare, something else I can't recall for webdav. I think you can even do ftp that way, read-only.
If you use the browsing method you don't have to and can't specify the protocol.
By appears in the Finder do you mean be available for mounting or already mounted and ready to use?

On the left side of the panel, unauthenticated.
Bingo! That suggestion listed the server on the left panel, as well as the shares under the local computer.
Thanks!
I've got the Mac Mini set up as a media center! Whee!
The only issue I have now is the keyboard. I have one of these, which works great except I can't figure out how to get it "officially" identified by the computer so I can custom map the command key. (By default, Command is mapped to the Windows logo key, which on this keyboard requires two keypresses - annoying.)
The problem is that the "press the key to the right of the shift key / press the key to the left of the shift key on the other side" step doesn't work because this keyboard only has one shift key. Anyone know how I can bypass this?
[eta: Nevermind, got it. The settings menu still doesn't think I have a keyboard attached, but I can quit things without spraining my fingers.]
That is the cutest little keyboard/trackpad!
I'm curious how the media center mini works out for you. Are you ditching cable?
We've been sans cable since January and haven't really missed it. Of course, part of that is that we don't have time to watch TV with the new baby and all - we've been keeping up with Top Chef via iTunes, but I haven't watched TDS or Colbert since she was born. Now with the Mini I can just turn them on from the couch (via Hulu or Comedy Central or Boxee or whatever) without having to plug my laptop into the TV.
How is the no-cable thing going? It sounds like its going well and I've been semi-inspired by your move to think hard about getting rid of our. I think most of what I want I could get on iTunes for less than what I pay for cable. And I want an antenna I guess to get football games in the fall/winter.
