good to know. I'll set up a google account for her, and then (hopefully) talk her through it over the phone.

Thanks LeN and SB!

if you need help, give us a holler. I can whip out my kindle and see what my settings are.

I never use gmail on the kindle. It isn't a pleasant experience, IMO.

I don't imagine it is. Looks like the browser is REAL basic, and text only. Mostly just looking to see if we can get her some e-mail ability, until I can afford to get her a cheap netbook. Although, something tells me she won't want to go to a Starbucks or Barnes & Noble to use the free wi-fi.

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

I'm trying to set up my wireless network in my new apartment. I'm using a Mac. At my old apartment, I had DSL, and I set up wireless with an Airport Express. It worked fine until a day or two before I moved, when I started getting a "Searching for PPPoE host" message scrolling next to the wireless symbol at the top of my screen. Since I was moving in a few days, I didn't try to fix it. Now, I'm at my new place. I've got cable internet. I tried plugging in the Airport Express and attaching the wire from the cable modem. The light on the front of the Airport Express turns green. When I turn on my computer, the network name that I used at my old apartment with this same Airport Express shows up in my list of available networks, but when I try to connect, I get that same "Searching for PPPoE host" message. Any idea what I need to do?

Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward.

In the AirPort utility, go to Manual Setup → Internet → Internet Connection, and where it says "Connect Using:" set it to "Ethernet" rather than PPPoE.

It worked! Thank you, Tom!

Now, I just have to rearrange my surge protectors and extension cords again. Too many things to plug in, nowhere near enough outlets.

I hate those. All the wires everywhere bother me. I got a bunch of the kind that plug into both outlets in a plate and then give you six outlets right against the wall. So much neater. And all my extra wire lengths are wrapped with twist-ties. At my old apartment, I had wires taped the the back of the legs of my desk so that they wouldn't be dangling. t /wire-related neurosis
