flea's rule for work: NEVER buy stuff for yourself. I mean, seriously. If they do not want to shell out for it, YOU do not need to make up the difference yourself, unless you are making Big Bank (in which case they usually shell out for stuff anyway.)

So there has been no occasion to reboot for 5.5 years? OS? Hardware? What kind of server? (i.e. shared hard disk, database? )
It's a Sun V100 running Solaris 8 acting as a secondary NIS server. Due to an oversight it was left out of our inventory list, and was not part of our regular OS patch cycle.
