I need a portable external HD for my laptop. I'm out of space. I picked up a WD My Passport Essential SE 1 TB at Costco this afternoon, but now I'm second-guessing the purchase. The Seagate Free Agent Go 1TB was also available, for the exact same price. ($109.99, if anyone wants to know.)
I chose the WD because it was significantly lighter, but after reading some reviews, I'm concerned about performance. Does anyone have experience with either (or both)? Should I go back to Costco tomorrow and get the Seagate instead?

My Brother needs an external drive for his computer - I think Terrabyte cause he is housebound with medical problems and needs to store photos, videos, sound files and so on. Don't think he needs networking. Any recs? XP computer, 300 Gig hard disk, 2 gig Ram. Don't know processor, but that should give an indication of quality. About 3 years old.

I have had at least three of the WD external drives act up or go bad on me in the past 18 months. I only use them as scratch drives or when there is another layer of data redundancy involved. I have had better luck with Seagates but they are harder to get with the FW800 ports I use.
